Review: ANNARASUMANARA

I just recently finished reading this comic called Annasumanara and I honestly didn't expect this to invite much of a reflection from me but I was wrong. Annarasumanara is now one of the best series I have read so far and therefore I want to share more of my thoughts about it here. Maybe I'll get someone to read it!

There is a rumor going around about a crazy magician wandering around the abandoned amusement park and claiming to use "real" magic. According to the rumors the magician asks everyone he meets the same question: Do you believe in magic? Most people seem to find that suspicious and creepy.
A girl Yoon Ah-ee has difficulties to take care of her sister and herself because of their lack of money. She wants to grow up as soon as possible and become a decent adult with a normal life. One day she meets a mysterious boy asking her the well known question.

SPOILER ALERT if you continue reading from here!

There are various important topics discovered in Annarasumanara. For me personally those were particularly touching because I have been struggling a lot with these kind of problems too.

Studying and working are Yoon Ah-ee's main center of attention as she tries to maintain from a one day to another. She sees adulthood as the only way out of her struggle. Take a note of the fact Yoon Ah-ee is just a middle school student! She had to take the role of a responsible adult at a very early age ever since she was kind of left alone with her younger sister and a huge amount of debt - the good old living and money problems. It's easy to notice Yoon Ah-ee is struging with depression because of her situation. The topic is open wide but not even once did it feel suffocating to me as it has in most of the series. The story follows Yoon Ah-ee and some of the side characters in the development on their thoughts. In the end the proggress in mindset is huge and the reader is supposed to see the changes. The tangible enviroment isn't changing almost at all during the whole story.

Becoming an adult is a challenge everyone has to face sooner or later but the problem here is the way it happens in Annarasumanara. Depression related to growing up comes with a reason behind, it it's NOT a thing that comes and goes away itself just for fun as I have noticed some people might believe. I hope it makes people reading this comic think about it. Maybe things like abandoning don't happen as radically in the society nowadays as it's represented here in this cartoon but there are a lot of children that have to grow up too early because of all kind of issues. There are too many families with problems out there and at least for me it still looks like everyone keeps prefering to hide everything that might make them look bad. Especially adults, those who are supposed to be stable and trustworthy! Why do we become so stiff when we get older? Adults are not always right. That's a fact people need to open their eyes for but don't get me wrong - elders should still be respected. But:Don't just blindly follow the old road because everyone has always done so.

The way of telling the story is really effective when you finally get to see what everything means. There are a lot of symbolic significances and that way the attention of the reader is directed to the main things instead of disturbing factors such as the looks of the characters. It was congfusing at first because I didn't know what was going on but everything was explained. Looking back afterwards I can only paraise such a brilliant way of telling this story. It fits the story developing perfectly.

The boundary between reality and almost dream like world of thoughts is very fuzzy in Annarasumanara. It's almost like a dream of Yoon Ah-ee as she goes through thinking. It's wonderful how the author has swimmingly juxtaposed magic to the problems because it's obvious that people have a lot of suspicion towards such a "childish" topic as magic. I don't want to spoil the most effective thing of the story - the real magic discussion because the story would lose its effectiveness a lot and become less of a mystery.

Sometimes you have to believe to the impossible to be able to realize it's actually real and reachable. Giving up you lose the chance until you try again so don't give up. Now it's up to you to find out the meaning and decide to believe or not to believe me as I say, yes it's actually real magic.
